What Happened

On Friday, May 15, 2026, Councilmember Inna Vernikov posted a video on social media showing Muslim men performing Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) outside Bnos Leah Prospect Park Yeshiva in Brooklyn. She framed their prayer — the most sacred weekly act of worship at the adjacent Al Madina Mosque — as a deliberate act of intimidation against Jewish girls.

The post rapidly spread across anti-Muslim media ecosystems, generating 30 million+ impressions and 3 million+ views within days — accompanied by dehumanizing comments calling worshippers animals, and suggestions to use pork-based provocations against them.

72 hours later, on May 18, two gunmen opened fire at the Islamic Center and School of San Diego, killing security guard Amin Abdullah, and staff members Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad. Police recovered anti-Islamic writing from the attackers' vehicle. The shooting is being investigated as a hate crime.

The Coalition does not claim direct causation, but documents a clear and established pattern: inflammatory rhetoric by elected officials → amplification by radicalization networks → violence.

The Facts

Al Madina Mosque (1781 East 16th St) has peacefully co-existed beside Bnos Leah Yeshiva for over a decade — with zero reported incidents.
The Yeshiva had already dismissed for the day at the time of Friday prayer. Students were not present.
The schoolyard is separated from the sidewalk by fencing and frosted glass, making the insinuations physically impossible.
Rabbi Leib Kelman, Dean of the Yeshiva, publicly stated: "No. They're very nice people. I don't know why there is any political torment. Nothing happened; there is nothing going on."
NYPD Community Affairs and detective outreach confirmed no incident occurred.
Vernikov's posts remain public even after her claims were fully disproven.

Speaker Menin's Prior Commitment

“I am appalled by Council Member Vernikov's past comments and conduct, and I have been very clear to her that if she repeats such disgusting rhetoric and behavior again, I will urge the Jewish Caucus to remove her from the task force entirely.”

Speaker Julie Menin · New York Times · Jan 30, 2026

One Standard. For All New Yorkers.

Islamophobia, antisemitism, and all forms of hatred deserve the same serious attention, accountability, and concrete protections — without exception.
